Relationship Patterns Pathway

Resource Pathway · a short explainer, a few tools, and suggested next steps.

What’s happening

Many relationship struggles come down to a repeating cycle: one person reaches for closeness and the other pulls back to calm down, and each reaction makes the other’s stronger. These patterns often echo how we learned to stay connected growing up.

Conflict itself isn’t the problem. Research on couples suggests that what matters most is how hard conversations start and how partners repair afterward. Repair is a skill, and it can be learned.

Suggested next steps

  • Notice your part of the cycle: do you tend to pursue, or withdraw?
  • Try one repair conversation using the guide, when you’re both calm.
  • If the same argument keeps coming back, couples or individual sessions can help you both see the pattern.
